A Prayer After Losing Someone You Love

Grief doesn't need fixing; it needs company. This prayer doesn't try to make the loss smaller. It asks God to sit with you inside it.

Lord, they're gone and the world hasn't stopped, and I don't know how it dares. Be near to me — nearer than the silence. Hold what I can't carry today. Amen.

A fuller prayer

Father, You say You are close to the brokenhearted, so You must be very close to me now. I'm not going to pretend before You: this hurts in places I didn't know I had. Thank You for every year, every ordinary Tuesday, every laugh I got to have with them — and forgive me the days when thanking hurts too much. Keep me eating, keep me sleeping, and send people who know that showing up matters more than saying something. When the waves come, be the thing that doesn't move. And hold them, Lord — hold them until I can. Through Jesus, who wept at a grave before He emptied it, Amen.
