A Prayer Before Surgery
The night before an operation is long. Whether the surgery is yours or belongs to someone you love, this prayer is for the waiting room of the heart.
Father, I place this surgery in Your hands. Give the surgeons steady hands and clear minds, give my body strength, and give the people who love me peace while they wait. I trust You with what I cannot control. Amen.
A fuller prayer
Lord God, You knit this body together, and You know every part of it better than the surgeons ever will. I bring You tomorrow morning — the theatre, the team, the hours of waiting. Guide every decision and every movement of their hands. Quiet the fear that keeps circling back. Watch over the ones who'll be sitting in the waiting room; give them something better than optimism — give them Your peace. And when it's over, whatever the outcome, let me wake to the knowledge that You never left the room. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Pray it aloud if you can — naming the fear out loud is half the unburdening. If you're the one waiting rather than the one on the table, pray for the medical team by role: the surgeon's hands, the anaesthetist's attention, the nurses through the night.

What do you say when praying for someone's surgery?
Keep it simple and specific: name the person, name the procedure, ask for skill for the team, peace for the family, and healing after. God is not marking your vocabulary.
Can I ask others to pray before a surgery?
Yes — and you should. Surgery is one of the moments the church has always gathered around. The chain exists for exactly this: real people praying for you by name before you go in.
Is it wrong to still feel afraid after praying?
No. Prayer isn't anaesthesia. Courage and fear usually walk in together; peace tends to arrive in the middle of the fear, not instead of it.
