A Prayer for Guidance

Crossroads are noisy places: everyone has advice, and every option has a brochure. This prayer is for choosing while listening.

Lord, You know the decision in front of me. Give me wisdom generously, as You promised. Open the right door, close the wrong one firmly, and give me peace to tell the difference. Amen.

A fuller prayer

Father, I'm at a fork and both roads look plausible, which is exactly the problem. You promise wisdom to anyone who asks without doubting — so I'm asking. Sort my motives while You're at it; show me if I'm chasing Your will or decorating my own. Speak through Your Word, through the counsel of honest people, through circumstances, and through that settled peace that doesn't shout. Close wrong doors hard enough that I can't pretend they're ajar. And when the way is clear, give me the nerve to walk it — guidance is wasted on the parked. In every case: not my will, but Yours. Amen.

Scripture to hold on to

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

JAMES 1:5 · BSB

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

PROVERBS 3:5–6 · BSB

I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will give you counsel and watch over you.

PSALM 32:8 · BSB

How to pray this

Pray, then do the unglamorous work: list the facts, ask two wise people who love you enough to disagree with you, and give the decision a deadline. God guides moving feet more often than parked ones.

Don’t carry this alone

The chain is small and forming — which means your request won't be lost in a crowd. Real people will pray this with you, for your situation, by name — and you’ll see each one happen.

Ask the chain to pray with you

Or join free and pray for others — praying earns prayers.

Common questions

How do I know if it's God's voice or my own wishes?

Test it: does it square with scripture, survive wise counsel, and persist in prayer? God's guidance doesn't contradict His Word and rarely needs you to rush.

What if I choose wrongly?

God is a redeemer of routes, not just a planner of them. Romans 8:28 was written for people mid-detour.
